I met Andy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before becoming a planned giving officer and, later, the co-founder of HigherEdJobs.com and is the company’s Chief Operating Officer. While Andy lives and works in the Chicago area and I work near Charlotte, I consider him a close friend.

Below describes Part 1 of the Unlabeled Leadership podcast with Andy [27:21].

Part 1: Choosing Your Attitude about Development

Regardless of role, we can lead others to help them grow mentally and morally. Andy shares a story about his orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Robert Carrol. If you know much about orthopaedic surgery, there usually is a substantial amount of work that patients need to do to recover. Dr. Carrol encouraged Andy to work hard at improving his mobility and hand capability. The work is much as a mental exercise as it is a physical one.

Dr. Carrol had a motto is:

Good Better Best: Never let them rest until your good is better and your better best.
