You Need These to Keep Your Seat at the Table
The third HRBP success factor
Being valued as a partner requires deliberate effort
Maslow missed a fundamental need: the need to be valued. Whether a consultant, talent developer, support staff, or HR professional, we want to be valued by the people we work with. We want to contribute in meaningful ways and make a difference. The same is true for HRBPs. If you work with BPs, you want that desirable seat at the table.
Getting to the table is one thing, but earning your keep is another. To be valued by BPs and sit at their table, you have to add value in several ways. Not only do you need to learn table etiquette, but you also need to give something that BPs need — something that they normally wouldn’t have. Effective HRBPs have that something.
In the 2022 HRBP Report, interviewees describe seven success factors that enable them to add value. The third one, Communicate and Empathize, may seem straightforward, but there are specific things you need to do that aren’t obvious or well-practiced by HRBPs.
What follows is sourced from successful HRBPs whom I interviewed.
